Neuroavis Chimera Disease

Neuroavis Chimera Disease (NCD) is the name given to the mysterious mutative force that is responsible for the emergence of SuperFauna Species. NCD functions similarly to neuroparasitic fungal infections such as Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, which targets and eventually commandeers the executive functioning of ants. However, NCD doesn’t spread itself via spores as is typical in fungal infections, but instead through a barely perceptible, previously unknown compound gas (Mutaflatus Discordex).

Origin

NCD has been all but confirmed to originate from The Monolith. This was ascertained through careful measurements of The Zone’s atmospheric makeup, in which it was found that the infectious gas Mutaflatus Discordex (MD) was particularly concentrated within the Monolith’s immediate vicinity.

Composition

Mutaflatus Discordex is composed of two gases: the first and by far more abundant being the extremely rare noble gas Xenon, present in trace amounts in earth’s atmosphere as well in the larger universe, most notably in gas giants. Xenon is known for being both anaesthetic and dissociative if inhaled, sometimes leading to tranquilly hallucinogenic/dreamlike states. The second agent is an unknown gas with an extremely complex molecular structure provisionally named the Monolithian Element.

Infection

While a Mutaflatus Discordex infection has yet to be witnessed in action, there is a working theory of its workings which eventually result in the propagation of NCD. Despite being the significantly smaller component in the MD compound (only making up about 1%), the Monolithian Element appears to be the dominant agent. It seems that something in its highly ionic nature prevents the usually heavy Xenon gas from settling, allowing it to remain buoyant and airborne. In turn, the ME uses Xenon’s anaesthetic properties to incapacitate its victims then breaks down and eventually replaces it’s hosts nervous system, at which point Neuroavis Chimera Disease is able to manifest. These manifestations can be physical mutations (usually in the cranial area), behavioural changes or both. When this mutative process peaks, a SuperFauna specimen is born.
