Deviljar
Caprimulgus daemonium
Population: 6 individuals found
Size: around 36cm long, 62-65cm wingspan
Diet: Various insect species (seems to favour moths)
Call: A sustained, descending wail sounding somewhat mournful
Threat Level: Low (possibly higher for those of the Christian faith)
Much like their non SuperFauna counterparts (the Eurasian Nightjar), they are nocturnal and very difficult to spot due to their camouflaged patterning and colouration. So far, there have been no instances of anomalous or memetic behaviour recorded in Deviljar specimens, and it is unknown what the elaborate structures on their heads are used for. These structures appear to be comprised of some kind of hard, organic material resembling something between bone and fungus. This material is found on many other SuperFauna species.
Despite their seemingly benign behaviour, they have been recorded terrorising local Christian organisations through their presence in additions to their distinct calls. Members of these groups have described these calls as “harrowing omens of doom” and suggest they may be messengers of the Devil. The mechanism behind this terror induction is currently unknown and seems to have no effect on those living secular lifestyles. This terror seems to be alleviated through group counselling sessions followed by tea and biscuits (it is currently speculated that biscuits, particularly those with high sugar and fat content, are the primary agent in this recovery process).
